Mentor for Harvard's College Access Program

Cambridge, MA, United States

9/2011 - 5/2015

Harvard's College Access Program was launched to motivate undocumented students to apply to college and earn a degree. As a mentor I was assigned two undocumented high school mentees per year. During the year I provided guidance and supervision to these students through the college application process by revising essays and overseeing their completion of the Common Application. A big part of my role was to help students research scholarships for undocumented students and encourage them during their path to college.

Franklin Afterschool Enrichment is a one-on-one tutoring program serving grade school children in the Franklin Field and Franklin Hill public housing developments and surrounding areas of Dorchester. The program strives to reinforce academic skills through individual tutoring and group activities. As the Co-Director I led 2 weekly 2-hour sessions to aid students with homework completion, serving approximately 20 children per week. I also monitored the program’s budget and logistics, recruited volunteers, managed a team of 8 volunteers, and applied to grants to help fund the program.

Rosie's Place was founded in 1974 as the first women’s shelter in the United States. The shelter's mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment that helps poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives. As a volunteer I participate in preparing the Dining Room for meals and greeting and serving the women during their meal with us. Typically, anywhere between 150-300 women get served per meal. The shelter offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.

Interests & Passions

  • I love traveling and experiencing new cuisines and cultures. I express myself through dance. Not only do I use dance as a workout, but also as an energy booster.
  • I am passionate about education, particularly closing the achievement gap.

Career Mission

I am interested in pursuing an MBA to accomplish my future goal of becoming the COO of an education company while also working to close the achievement gap. As a leader for a company I hope to show minorities and other women that we too can take a stance, make business decisions at higher levels, and leave a lasting impact in underrepresented communities.
