UIUC with scholarship vs UCI Merage with Scholarhsip for an MBA
I have admits from both UCI Merage with some scholarship and UIUC with some scholarship. I want to work in a Tech Product company or in Tech Strategy Consulting post-MBA. Being an international, which school and which location do u think could provide me better oppotunities? I am more inclined towards UIUC, as it would cost me less based on the living expenses and the fact that UIUCs tuition fees is less but can spending a little more to graduate from California prove to be better than UIUC? I am fine to spend that little extra but just want to weigh my options before I make that decision.
Looking for some help and advice!!

- Eric Allen expert Good question and sorry for the delay. First of all, congrats on both acceptances - exciting to have an opportunity for both schools. IL and CA are two very different locations, so it's really a personal decision. While I don't think it's appropriate to tell you what to do, I will give you a few suggestions on how to think about it (you just inspired me to write a blog - stay tuned :-). First of all, think about what kind of company you want to go to post-MBA and see if they recruit there. Secondly, think about the alumni network - how big? is it regional? how connected are people. Also, try to connect with students and alumni and see what kind of reception you get - we may have some folks here or you can try LinkedIn. Finally, which is a better fit in terms of class size, learning environment, cost, etc. Lots to choose from, but write the factors down that matter most, grade them and go with your gut. Either way, you should have a great experience. I hope that helps. I will see if I can reach out to get perspectives from students who have been in your situation.
- Carl Hulsey Hi Mohamed. Sorry for the late reply! I'm a 2nd year MBA at UIUC, so I can answer your question. We're located near Chicago (about 2.5 hours), which is a growing tech city. There's many job opportunities close by. Additionally, the college is concentrating a lot on data analytics, with plans to add more classes on this subject and Deloitte donating money for a data analytics center on campus. Additionally, if you're interested in start-up tech companies, Research Park on campus has quite a few opportunities (UIUC is where YouTube and Reddit both started). If you have any other questions that I can help out with, let me know!
- Eric Allen expert Mohamed, thanks for inquiring about UCI Merage and UIUC. @Carl Hulsey was gracious enough to respond to you with his perspective and I hope it was helpful. The staff over at UIUC was very responsive and supportive. We reached out to Merage, but they didn’t have interest in assigning anyone to comment at this time, but we will work our back channels and see if we can get a Merage student or alumni to reach out directly. Merage is a good school and we’ve had clients go there and have a good experience. Good luck with the decision and let me know where you end up.
